How does transformer manufacturing company brand influence power transformer quality?
Any product that you buy should be of good quality. After having chosen the type of power transformer that you want, you will have many manufacturing companies which will be dealing in similar transformers. You will have to make a thorough research and know what you should look out for before you decide on the manufacturing company you want to buy from. Each manufacturer might give a different quality product and you should know enough about the transformer to choose the best.
You should first check the type of winding material that is used by the company. Generally copper or aluminum is used for making windings in transformers. Each of these comes in different thickness and different grades. Each will be suited for a particular need and also affect the working of the transformer. The conducting material's innate resistance to the current flow will result in winding loss or load loss. If a material is used that has lower resistively or bigger diameter, then it will be more efficient. This will also lead to power and money being saved.
You should check if the core is efficient. If this is not so, then there will be transformer loss at low loads. To reduce core loss, the core should be built with good material. The loss occurs because of the cyclic changes in the magnetic state of iron and due to the flow of small current to the iron. So, you should choose a company that gives a good core which will make sure that the flow of the magnetic flux is carried in the direction of the cold-rolled, grain-oriented steel so that the core loss is low.
You should check the noise level while buying a transformer. There is generally a humming noise because of vibration caused by alternating flux in the magnetic core. The sound will be different in different sizes of transformers. Proper installation will also reduce noise. Placing of the transformer is also an important factor. If it is placed in a corner, there will be more noise. So, you should check and buy the one that has low noise levels.
Besides these points you should see the performance data of the power transformer. You should see whether it has no load loss or full load loss. You should check its polarity and phase rotation. You should know its impedance at reference temperature. You should check its efficiencies at 25, 50, 75 and 100 percent load. You should know the regulation at 80% and 100% power factor. You should know its audible sound level. You should also take into account the insulation class and the rated temperature rise. You should be aware of the size and weight of the transformer. The applied potential test and induced potential test should be known. You should know about the excitation current. The IR, IX IZ percentages should be known. You should also find out the reference and ambient temperatures.
You should also get to know about the warranty that is offered by the manufacturer. It should generally be for ten years from the date it has been manufactured. The warranty should be against any fault that is seen in the workmanship, the material used and the performance of the transformer. Besides checking all the details about the parts and the working of the transformer, care should be taken to see that the manufacturer offers quality service after it is sold. He should deliver the transformer on time and any technical assistance that is sought should be available from the manufacturer.
You can search the internet or ask dealers to show the different types of power transformers that they have. Compare the quality, the after sales service, the price etc. and then buy it from the manufacturer who gives you the best deal. The quality only determines the brand. If the manufacturer maintains a high standard, then definitely the user will buy it.
