Core types of electronic transformer

The two main designs of core type electronic transformer are closed-core transformer and shell-core transformer. In closed-core type transformer, the primary and secondary windings will be wound around a closed core ring. In the shell-core type transformer, the primary and secondary windings will be passed through the core. In both designs of core type electronic transformer, the magnetic flux linking the two windings will travel entirely within the core, with no intentional path through air. Core type electronic transformers mostly feature low magnetic leakage, low operating temperature and reliable safety. The electronic transformers containing laminated-steel cores have steel laminations insulated with non conducting material like varnish. Iron-core transformer offers better power transfer than air-core transformer. Ferrite core transformers are highly used for high frequency applications.

Core electronic transformerThe different shapes of core available in core type electronic transformers are E core, E-I core, U core, U-I core, Pot core, R core, RM core, PQ core, EP core, EFD core, etc. E core transformers feature high permeability rate and high saturation magnetic flux density. This type of core transformer is mainly used in communication equipments. E-I core transformer is used for switching power supply. R core transformers are small, thin and light. They offer minimal leakage flux and exciting current. They provide high efficiency and low temperature. EI core laminated construction is mostly used in isolation transformers, step-up and step-down transformers and auto transformers. R core transformers are used in audio equipments, medial equipments, electronic instruments, Audio visual systems, power industry equipments, and satellite office machines.

Electronic transformers are transformers used in electronic devices. There are different types of electronic transformers such as power transformer, pulse transformer, current transformer, isolation transformer, switch mode transformer, inverting transformer, step-down transformer, impedance matching transformer, high voltage transformer, saturable transformer, low voltage transformer, toroidal transformers, square wave, etc. Sub-types of switching transformers include fly back transformer and feed forward converter. Sub-types of pulse transformer include gate drive transformer and trigger transformer.

Electronic power transformers are electronic transformers used for supplying power to electronic circuits. EI type Low frequency power transformer features low loss at no load and low temperature rise. It offers high power output and high efficiency.

Isolation transformer has symmetrical windings. Isolation transformers with electrostatic shields are utilized for power supplies of electronic equipments such as computers or laboratory instruments.

Step down transformers enable you to have the correct voltage input for your equipment needs. Step down transformers are available in different sizes from small to huge sized units.

Electronic low voltage transformer includes an inverter and a small transformer as the main components. Electronic low voltage transformers are very compact and light compared to magnetic low voltage transformers.

Toroidal transformers features negligible 'No Load Loss' and excitation, no inherent vibration, low noise and stray field, higher efficiency, reduced reactance and temperature rise, feasible magnetic shielding, better regulation and reliability, and ease of mounting. They are suitable for high frequency supply systems.

Flyback transformer or line output transformer is used in power supply of a cathode ray tube (CRT) to generate high voltage needed for driving the CRT. Flyback transformer is designed to function like a pure inductor and it stores energy in its magnetic circuit. The currents flowing through a flyback transformer either increases or decreases in linear sawtooths unlike a regular transformer. Flyback transformers are most conveniently operated due to the properties of core materials.
