Voltage transformer difference between US and Europe
Generally travelers from US and other countries to
Europe face the difficulty with their electronics, as
European and American power system are run in the different
manners. Most of the countries across the world including
Europe make use of 220 volt/50 hertz system. Very few
counties such as United States make use of 110 volt/60
hertz electricity that is actually believed to be safer.
As a result, appliances in such nations are intended
to connect to particular kind of power source, and using
American devices in European outlets and vice versa
could as well result in havoc.
Many nations further use special plugs,
and a number of plug adapter tool kits are obtainable
for connecting to foreign plugs. However, use of these
plugs without a voltage transformer or voltage converter
could result in dangerous fireworks. The voltage in
Europe is believed to twice that of the voltage available
in the United States, and while many electronics are
considered to adjust to voltage changes, it is critical
to check. If the tool is not able to handle 220 volts
of electricity, it would in turn fail. In addition,
some electrical devices cannot handle the lower 50 hertz
cycle found in much of the world, and may experience
difficulties.
To see if a voltage transformer is
wanted, look at the informational panel on the back
of the electrical tool in question. Many manufacturers
generate tools with differing voltages in mind, and
might list an aptitude to handle input ranging from
110-240 volts, stating that it would work in Europe
as well and the United States. In addition, the equipment
is by and large rated at 50/60 hertz, and would as well
work on either cycle. However, some tools, especially
hair dryers, are intended to work at either 110/60 or
220/50. If this is the case, a voltage transformer is
essential.
Travelers need to be especially cautious
with hair dryers, which have extremely high wattage
requirements. Generally, it is safer to buy a hair dryer
in the country where it would be used, or to buy a voltage
transformer that could handle at least 2000 watts to
avoid damage to the hair dryer, operator, and electrical
system it is plugged into.
