Tim Wilson, Assistant City Manager told that "utility officials were hopeful that power could be restored by this morning." Residents of Miami were calling up public safety agencies for medical assistance that cannot be attended without electrical devices. Many nursing homes were also without emergency generators. There was no water problem in the city. At the substation on Steve Owens Boulevard, the transformer that exploded was described as looking like a barrel that had been split down the middle.
