Power outage in some parts of the city during afternoon

Many parts of the city faced outage problem in the afternoon due to transformer breakdown in New Bern's substation. Power failure affected certain parts of the city like Neuse Boulevard, Craven Regional Medical center and New Bern. Power outage problem occurred for 20 minutes only because they had a back up transformer due to which they were able to bring back power. Many patients did not face problem because there is a generator which works immediately in critical care units and within few seconds in the rest of the hospital. Jon Rynne, the city's director of electric utilities said, "transformer failure is one of the most complicated electrical problems that the city has to analyze, and testing to figure it out sometimes takes at least six hours." is power breakdown affected nearly 5,000 customers.

ABB has introduced a new type of transformer

ABB has introduced a new type of high-voltage transformer that can be used in power superhighways which can transit major amount of electrical power over long distances. This new 800 kV high voltage transformer will be used in the World's highest and longest voltage power transmission link, located in china. This 2000km ultra high voltage direct current transmission corridor will run from Xiangjiaba hydropower plant in western china to shanghai. This high voltage power transformer has a capacity of 6,400MW, which can supply current to nearly 31 million people. State Grid Corporation of china was the first to order this type of transformer. ABB is trying to change the current from AC to DC and also to raise the voltage for transmission. UHVDC technology is suitable for countries like china, where power generation facilities are often far from where output is used.
