Monday, April 20, 2009
On April 15, 2009 nearly 6500 homes and businesses in Miami were without electrical power due to an explosion in GRDA substation. Grand River Dam Authority was trying to figure out the problem. Tim Wilson, Assistant City Manager told that "utility officials were hopeful that power could be restored by this morning." Residents of Miami were calling up public safety agencies for medical assistance that cannot be attended without electrical devices. Many nursing homes were also without emergency generators. There was no water problem in the city. At the substation on Steve Owens Boulevard, the transformer that exploded was described as looking like a barrel that had been split down the middle. "We are looking at about 12 hours without power, " Wilson said of the best estimates by utility officials.
