High voltage DC transmission system

The world's first ultra high-voltage DC transmission system (UHVDC) has completed its final testing. It is the first transformer for the new 800 kilovolt (kv) HVDC. HVDC transmission systems normally operate at a standard transmission voltage of 500kv. Siemens has decided to deliver 10 high performance transformers for the Yunnan Guangdong HVDC system, which from mid-2010 onwards will be transmitting 5,000 megawatts of power over a distance of 1,400 km. HVDC solutions form part of siemens environmental portfolio, which generated euro 17 billion in sales for the company last year. To achieve this 60 per cent increase in peak voltage capacity, siemens had to develop a range of entirely new technical solutions for the new 800 kv HVDC transmission system. Siemens has also got order for 10 more HVDC system from Xiangjiaba hydroelectric power plant in southwestern china and shanghai, which will transmit 6,400 MW over a distance of more than 2,000 km.

Megger expands its transformer test product line

Megger group has decided to take over Pax diagnostics of Sweden. Pax has designed a new range of transformer, named as Pax IDAX. Pax IDAX is used to measure moisture in power transformers as well as testing insulation material in various power system products. The Pax FRAX range of sweep frequency response analysis products are designed for detecting electromechanical changes inside power transformers. The products fulfill all recent international standards and recommendations for SFRA testing. Megger has been the premier provider of electric test equipment and measuring instruments for electrical power applications. Megger provides a full service solution to meet your electrical test and measurement needs. Pax was founded in 2004, it develops, manufactures and markets test equipment for the power industry with a focus on insulation diagnostics and power transformer testing. Both megger and PAX together will create the strongest product line in the industry to address end user concerns.

Green Transformer

A new transformer has been introduced by siemens which is not only biodegradable, but also less flammable than the mineral oil. Due to this, transformer substations will be able to feed power into the grid, while confirming to strict environmental regulations. Siemens has developed a new green transformer so that it could be environmental friendly. In the last fiscal year, the company generated revenues of Euro17 billion from its environmental portfolio alone. A transformer is generally used to raise or lower the voltage in a substation as the situation demands. Due to this, the transformer becomes hot and this heat must be eliminated by means of a liquid coolant. The insulation fluid used in siemens transformer is made of natural ester liquid based on vegetable oils, such as rape seed, soybean and sunflower oils. This makes it completely biodegradable. This transformer can be used in areas where stringent environmental restrictions apply. The load capacity can be increased and the capital expenditure can be reduced in this type of transformer.
