Thousands of residents in Rawalpindi remained without electricity for nearly 8 hours due to power breakdown. The power supply was disconnected from Islamabad supply company (Iesco) due to fault in chaklala grid transformer which affected nearly 60 localities. Due to power failure, lot of damage had been caused to food stored in houses. Due to power failure nearly 120,000 residents and more than 20 retail markets were affected. Many areas like nighatabad, kosar colony, Jehangir road, dhoke khabba, dhoke chiraghdin and many other areas were affected due to outage.
Iesco did not receive any phone calls from consumers regarding power failure problem. Superintended engineer said to the press that the faults appeared on a grid transformer at chakala grid station which caused power breakdown. The four feeders namely Jehangir road feeder, Pindi three feeder, PAF feeder and tahmasapabad feeder were controlled by a single incoming panel and due to fault on it, the Iesco had to disconnect power supply. It took couple of hours to fix the panel.

Officials in Snohomish country though that a series of miniature fire was caused due to helium balloons but later the officials came to know that it was caused due to lightening strike on a transformer box. This event occurred at 10.00 A.M near 7700 block of 67th avenue west of Snohomish. Fire officials came because the jolt traveled from power pole to a metal fence to blow apart and hit a nearly house. The women tried to escape from that house by climbing over the electrified fence because of which she got an electric shock but she was not injured. Nothing happened to the house. There were no power cuts in that area because surplus power is provided in case of emergencies. Summer brings lot of problems to power lines and transformer boxes because birds fly into power lines.

A new technique has been found out that could detect the thieves who drain oil from the transformer. The institute who found this system will help Tanesco company to detect thieves of transformer oil. Because of this problem the company was losing a lot of money. Tanzania was facing a lot of problem causing power cut due to thieves who drain out oil from the transformers. This system will tell the status of the transformer; is there a decrease in oil, or there are thieves stealing oil from the transformer, the location of the transformer. The institute has found out another innovation where the low income people can get power supply without doing the house wiring. It costs a lot of money to do the wiring for the whole house. A gadget known as ready board has to be purchased which would supply electricity to homes.

In Lucknow new meters have been installed to check electricity pilferage. The chief engineer, LESA; Mr. KB Ram says that the main reason for the installation of meters is to check whether is there any wastage of power.
A difference of 2-3% would not matter as that would be taken as a line loss. Beyond that, we have all the reasons to say that power is being pilfered by someone in the circle," he said.
As the source where the power theft would be found by the LESA, the LESA would take an immediate action by raiding into the house where the power is supplied through the transformers. In such a case the consumer would be penalized.
This initiative is going to help the LESA in one of the country's major issue of power scarcity. The division has already installed 150 transformers across the city and they are on their way in installing many other similar meters in the residential areas.
This is going to be a pilot model taken up and if this strategy of the LESA works then the process would continue throughout the state of Uttar Pradesh followed. After Lucknow the meters would be installed in Kanpur, Meerut, Agra and Gorakhpur would be covered.
The biggest concern with LESA is the protection of meters. The authorities have admitted there have been cases of fraudulent activities taking place like the stealing of certain parts of the transformers. There is also a fear about the damage of the parts of transformers.
